Morrisons introduces measures to support British Farmers and thank them for feeding the nation

British farmers are continuing to work tirelessly during the coronavirus pandemic, however the closure of the food service, restaurant and hospitality sector has left many without a market, seriously impacting farming incomes. There is particular concern for milk with the spot price reaching as low as 5 pence-per-litre and beef prices hitting a five year low.

In response to this, Morrisons is offering a discount to its 2,700 farmers when they buy their own groceries, and has launched a ‘Buy British’ food box giving its customers the option to support British agriculture.

The 5% discount which comes into effect from today will last until July 12th when it will be reviewed. Morrisons farmers will receive a discount card in the post this week from the supermarket to use during the 12 week period in store.

The ‘100% Buy British’ food box which launches today will include entirely British seasonal farm produce and costs £45.

Contents of the box will vary as the season progresses; and Morrisons is searching for speciality British suppliers who want to supply their products for the box.

Sophie Throup, Head of Agriculture, said: “This is a difficult time for the nation and it’s a very difficult time for farmers. We’re the biggest supermarket customer for British farmers and they continue to turn out good quality food in the face of very real challenges. We want to show our thanks for all their work and encourage our customers to buy British.”

The ‘Buy British’ box includes: twin pack rib-eye steaks, pork loin steaks, chicken thigh fillets, lamb mince, The Best traditional cured unsmoked back bacon rashers, 6 The Best pork sausages, Morrisons for Farmers British semi skimmed Milk, Morrisons British salted butter, Morrisons For Farmers extra mature cheddar cheese, The Best Tasty Lancashire cheese, The Best 17 Month Matured Red Fox cheese, chantenay carrots, baby potatoes, cucumber, brown onions and The Best baby sweet peppers. £1 from each box bought will be donated to farming help charities who are supporting British farming families via The Prince’s Countryside Fund.
