Small Abattoirs Round Table Discussion
June 29, 2019
The Fund held a round table discussion with 30 industry stakeholders at Dumfries House to discuss the future and viability of small and local abattoirs.
The discussion proved very timely and as a result of this the Fund is planning to conduct some research surrounding small abattoirs in summer 2020.
John Mettrick commented “It was interesting that everyone had similar problems associated with waste disposal, hide and skin price and regulation. The different ways that abattoirs were run in Shetland and Mull through co-operatives was noted, as well as lessons from what has happened in Orkney with the closure of the abattoir there.
“From the discussions it was clear that although small abattoirs are struggling, they remain an essential part of the infrastructure in a rural economy”.
