Powering up Cumbria & Northumbrland
Supporting Rural Communities in Cumbria & Northumberland
In 2025 we launched our first county-based programme, targeting rural organisations in Cumbria and Northumberland.
We are currently supporting 16 projects with over £387,00 in funding, in partnership with The National Lottery Community Fund.

Lesbury Community Shop, Northumberland, England
The project: Lesbury Community Shop is a community-owned and run, non-profit-taking, village shop and provider of community-focused services in Northumberland.
In 2025, we awarded the organisation £19,365 to allow the shop to create a complete annual event program, with dedicated days to support local charities, groups and craftspeople.
Key themes from this project:
- Powering up local communities
- Increasing environmental sustainability
Our impact
Tony Dee, Chair of Management Committee, Lesbury Community Shop, said: “Lesbury Community Shop is delighted to receive and RCF Award. The RCF Award will allow Lesbury Community Shop to design develop and produce a complete Event Guide.
“The Guide will help boost footfall and income for our shop. Also, we believe the Guide will be invaluable for similar enterprises around the country – they can gain similar benefits by ‘following the recipes’.”
Vista Veg, Cumbria, England
The project: Vista Veg is a veg box scheme delivering a wide variety of fruit and veg to local communities year-round. Its crops are grown by a co-operative of Cumbrian farmers and growers in their fields and polytunnels across the county. Together they’re building a more sustainable food system for Cumbria.
In 2025, we awarded the organisation £29,960 to establish a new market garden in a rural community, deliver training for new entrant growers, organise community open days and school visits.
Key themes from this project:
- Increasing environmental sustainability
- Powering up local communities
Our impact
Lynn Barnes, Secretary of Vista Veg said: “This award means we can establish a new market garden in the small rural community of Dentdale & Sedbergh to provide year-round, seasonal vegetables and fruit to local people and businesses there through our Home Grown Here veg box scheme.
“Importantly, the project will also provide bespoke, on-the-job training for new-entrant growers keen to learn how they can set-up similar small-scale market gardens from scratch back in their own communities. This project has the potential to impact people’s lives and livelihoods in a really positive way.”
Building capacity in Northumberland
We are currently running a project to build the capacity of rural community organisations in Northumberland, particularly in harder-to-reach areas. The project is funded in partnership with The National Lottery Community Fund.
The project will be delivered in three phases:
- Understanding the existing landscape of community organisations in Northumberland and the challenges they face, via a mapping and survey process.
- Engaging with selected local organisations to give them the support they need and build their capacity, via one-to-one advice and mentoring, signposting to existing training and resources, and group sessions.
- Helping these organisations to develop sustainable funding solutions to deliver on their potential.
